Different ways to add a bit of personality to your home

When it comes to accessorising your home it's a very fine balance between purpose and clutter. It's not an easy task that's for sure! In our modern lives, we are so lucky to have so many wonderful things on offer to make our homes and spaces suited to our personalities. At what point do you become an accidental hoarder *guilty*.... or too scared to add to your space that it's just become bland and clinical? Step forward Hay...

Well, aren't you in for a treat! we have put together some top tips inspired by the wonderful Danish brand Hay, who aren't strangers when it comes to accessorising the right way.

1. Let your personality shine

Remember this is your home, your space and you're the one who will be living with the decor choices. Don't be afraid to put a stamp on it. Maybe start with a mood board and gather colours, textures, and pictures of things you like. Pinterest is always a good place to gather inspiration and create a personalised board. This will make a good starting point, as you can always refer back to it further down the line.

2. Accessorising is key

The easiest way to inject some instant personality into your home is by adding accessories. Hay is great at creating things that are functional and joyful. You can even build up a collection of staple statement pieces that you can workaround. The great thing about accessories is that nothing is permanent, things can be switched in and out with the changing seasons.

3. Create ambience

Creating a warm and inviting interior is usually something we all want to achieve. Adding candles to a space can really set the mood. Even decorative candles (that may be too nice to burn) can really elevate a table setting or add interest to a bare shelf. Plus if we are honest, we just can't get enough of the Hay Candle collection.

4. It's all about the texture

Mixing up different textures is perfect for creating depth and contrast. Experimenting with soft furnishing can be an instant interior update. Even beyond cushions and throws, try mixing materials such as glass or ceramic against wood or concrete to let both materials really have their moment. Adding artwork and prints can also have this effect and can really help bring a space to life.

5. Add a pop of colour

Adding colour or sticking to a chosen colour palette can really create natural harmony in your home. It can also be a nice way to inject slight bits of fun into a neutral setting. Unless your chosen look is bright and bold be mindful of the number of statement colours you introduce, as it may become overwhelming.

6. Get organised

It's important to remember you are human! You have things that need to be easily accessible in your day to day life, that might not fit the 'showroom' aesthetic. So why not be smart about your storage choices. The Hay Colour Crate has endless amounts of uses and looks darn good whilst doing so. They can easily hide the clutter of an office space or become handy storage in the kitchen. With a number of stylish colour choices and sizes, you will easily find one that fits your needs.

7. A nice vase goes a long way

Now vases are making a comeback... not that they ever really went away, but people are getting excited about them again. Gone are the days of rummaging in the garage for an old dusty vase to house your newly bought -or gifted - flowers. Vases are here to stay! Why not invest in a vase that looks just as good with or without flowers in and let it become a staple piece. You can even add twigs or dried flowers if empty vases aren't quite your thing.

8. Inject greenery into your home

Adding plants to your living space isn't just good for your health and mood but it also adds life and personality to your interior. Depending on your style you may want to keep the pots quite natural looking to compliment the plant. The Hay Plant Pots have a minimal natural style that looks good in most interiors as they play with the idea of texture without being too overpowering. Plus you will get great joy watching your plants grow and evolve in your space.

9. Take your time

Now creating the perfect interior doesn't have to be rushed. Take your time and see how things feel. Let your space grow and evolve with you and add pieces along the way. It's important to remember that it doesn't have to be done all in one go.

10. Make sure it's liveable

Sometimes it's so easy to get wrapped up in the Instagram perfect life that you forget to enjoy your surroundings. Allow rooms to feel lived in and natural, sometimes the robe hung up on the door or the slippers by the bed can add to your interior. You want your house to feel like a home, it's for you and no one else.
