The Utility Story
Technically a gift store. Realistically, more than that.
The official line is that we’re a gift shop. The honest version is that roughly half our customers walk in for someone else and leave with something for themselves too. We consider that a success.
Utility Gift is an independent retailer with six stores across Liverpool, Manchester, Altrincham, and Chester — and a website that ships across the UK and beyond. We stock design-led gifts, greeting cards with actual personality, homeware, fashion and lifestyle brands worth knowing about. Things for the people you love. Things for yourself, no justification required.
We’re not a department store. We’re not a marketplace. We’re a team of people who care a lot about finding the good stuff, putting it somewhere you can find it, and wrapping it up nicely if you need us to.

It started with a coffee shop
In 1999, three friends — Richard, Dick, and Kate — were running a coffee shop on Bold Street, Liverpool. Coffee Union, if you want the full picture. Before the big chains had arrived and Bold Street was still figuring out what it wanted to be.
Their landlord offered them the empty unit two doors down. They said yes, maxed out their credit cards, decorated it themselves, and opened the first Utility on 4th November 1999 with a range of products they genuinely believed in. Christmas was coming. It worked.
Twenty-five years later, we’re still on Bold Street. We’re also in Liverpool ONE, Manchester city centre (twice), Altrincham, and Chester. Still independent. Still making decisions without a boardroom full of shareholders telling us what to do. Still finding things we think you’ll love.
Proudly independent since 1999
No shareholders. No head office politics. No one telling us we need to carry something we don’t believe in.
Being independent means we get to make decisions that are right for our customers and our team, not right for a quarterly earnings call. It means we can take a chance on a brand you’ve never heard of, or drop something the moment it stops being worth your money.
It also means when you shop with us — online or in store — you’re keeping a 25-year-old Liverpool business alive. We don’t take that lightly. Thank you.
Who shops with us
Honestly? All sorts. But if we had to describe our people: they’re the ones who notice when a gift has been thought about. Who’d rather spend £30 on something the recipient actually loves than £100 on something safe. Who treat themselves with the same energy they bring to buying for others.
You might be buying a Jellycat for your best friend’s new baby. Or a card that says exactly the thing you couldn’t put into words. Or a candle for no reason other than it smells like the flat you want to live in. All of that is welcome here.
