It's no big secret that here at Utility we love a bit of home decor! It's the perfect way to update an existing space or to add the finishing touch to your newly made-over room. Without a doubt wall art is the best way to let your personality truly shine.

Whether you're looking to hang one or two pieces or maybe even create your very own gallery wall. With wall art, you have the opportunity to personalise it to suit the space you have. Now as tempting as it is to just crack on with the nail and hammer. You might want to take a few steps back and put some thought into what you're going to hang and how you're going to do it.

Top Tips For Arranging Your Wall Art Like A Pro!

1. Pick Your Artwork

Now, this seems obvious I know but it's important that you make the right choice. This will be something you see daily and it will be one of the first things guests look at when entering your home. Pick things that really speak to you, the most important thing is that you like what's up. You can theme your choices by style, colour pallet, size... It's best to lay out the possibilities in front of you on a flat surface to see what works best together.

2. Pick Your Wall

Find the spot you want to fill, base this choice on what you want to hang (or visa versa choose a spot first then pick the artwork) Above a fireplace is always a good spot as it's the natural focal point of a room. If the space or wall is smaller, choose smaller pieces for narrow walls and larger pieces for big walls. Tightly-grouped even numbers of pieces always work well for both, on a small wall it gives a window effect whilst on a larger wall it will be balanced out.

3.Get Planning

This so important, you need to plan everything out on a table or a floor before swinging that hammer. Why not make a blueprint and draw out the layout or even better, draw around the sizes of your pieces and cut them out of paper. This way you can stick them to the wall and experiment with the arrangement. This can also help with hanging later on. You can mark the hanging points from the back of the art on each piece of the paper. When you're happy, you can then hammer in the nails to the points on the paper then simply remove the paper.

4. Hang At Eye Level

You want to enjoy the artwork you hang, it's best to hang artwork so the centre of your display is approximately eye level. Whether you're hanging a group or a single piece its best to consider it all as one piece. For example if you're hanging a group of 4 pieces, imagine it as one sqaure rather than 4.

Unless you are decorating a dining room, consider hanging the wall art lower, so you can enjoy it more when seated.

5. Placement Tips

When hanging art over a sofa or other pieces of furniture, it's best to make sure it's not wider than the width of the furniture. As a general rule of thumb, the art should be about 50-75% the width of the furniture.

Arrangement Ideas

Hang In Even Numbers

This is the perfect solution if you have wall art that is small in size, this allows you to create a grouping that has visual balance. Keep the spacing fairly tight between pictures for the best result.

Hanging A Triptych

There is something so satisfying about hanging artwork in threes. It works well at drawing the eye to the artwork with out overwhelming the viewer. You can even use your hand with your fingers closed as a good guide for spacing between the three.

Asymmetrical Hanging

This works well if you have a set of prints that share something similar, whether it be style, colours, subject etc... This is a nice way to give the arrangement an organic balance. Be playful with the layout, remember its always easier to start with the larger picture first and work around it.
