Here are some of the finest hangout spots in Liverpool. Full disclosure- they're all food and coffee related. And we're okay with that. We love these Liverpool indies and we think you will too, so in no specific order, here we go!

We can't think of a better way to spend our time than eating sandwiches on street corners, drinking coffee in Calderstones and passing the time with pasta-making. There are so many great places in Liverpool, too many to list, but here are a few of our fave hangout haunts.

1. COFFI

We all know and love Pilgrim Street. Most of us had our first pint at The Pilgrim, right? At the bottom of the long cobbled lane, just outside the shadow of the cathedral, is a red brick building with a giant barn door. It's COFFI, the bakehouse and coffee shop with one of the most underrated views in the city.

Inside is simple, paired back, a little bare even. And it all makes for a super chilled hangout spot. COFFI work with different roasters, so there's always something new and interesting to try. In the summer, you can grab yourself something iced and delightful and take a slow stroll towards the Anglican. Make sure you grab a Pastéis de Nata and a cruffin to go!

2. Press Bros. Coffee

Ah, Press Bros, home of the best Cortado on the planet. Lark Lane isn't short of great coffee places, but Press Bros. Coffee is a glowing addition. This place is usually as bustling as the lane, but you somehow always grab the very last table. It's a great spot to meet friends, and the vibe is just right for hanging out.

The coffee is great, but if you want something stronger, there's an incredible menu of weird and wonderful espresso martinis. The sourdough is spectacular, the cinnamon rolls are to die for, and the staff are the friendliest baristas in town. Seriously, always smiling.

3. Skaus

One of the jewels of Allerton Road, you always get more than expected at Skaus. Every single plate that comes out of the kitchen is a work of art. A magical combination of seasonal ingredients and Scouse hospitality, this place has a chilled, scandi vibe. It's the sort of spot you go to for a quick coffee and catch up, but an hour later you're ordering a cake, having just finished a plate of steak and eggs.

Ingredients are ethically (and often locally) sourced, and they're highly conscious of food wastage, so it's a great place to support if you're into slow, traceable food. On your way out, have a nosey at the curated collection of wines, bread, preserves and local ceramic lovelies!

4. Sub rosa

In the heart of Liverpool's creative quarter is one of the best places to hang out on a sunny day. It's the sort of place you feel comfortable haunting for a few hours, whether you're with a big group of mates or on a chilled date.

There's something so appealing about a venue that's a little industrial, a little shabby. It's like a series of super-fancy bus stops, and we love it. It's the perfect place to basque in the sun, sipping a house pale ale and enjoying good company. Want a bite to eat? No problem, they've teamed up with Root Catering so there's always a delicious, souped-up snack menu. We like to start and end a night at Sub rosa.

5. One Percent Forest

A little piece of Iceland nestled comfortably in the centre of Woolton Village, One Percent Forest is a coffee shop and cocktail bar serving up Nordic-inspired snacks.

One Percent Forest aid reforestation by planting a tree every time they pour a coffee into a reusable cup. And who doesn't like to feel like they're saving the planet as they indulge in delicious coffee?

Their menu is simple but perfectly formed. We highly recommend the Scandi Hot Dog with crunchy pickles and crispy onions. It's the perfect place to chill out after strolling around the farmer's market.

6. Cuthbert's Bakehouse

Cuthbert's Bakery, putting the pleasant in Mount Pleasant since 2009. It might not have the Scandi look that's so damn popular at the mo, but it's undeniably the home of the best Afternoon Tea in Liverpool.

It's the sort of place that you book ahead (even though you don't have to) and then spend days thinking about. Anticipating all of the delightful delicacies that are in store! They switch their afternoon tea up every month, creating incredible, themed menus inspired by places and occasions.

Inside is cutesy, a little quaint. It's the perfect place to spend time with your bestie, hanging out for a few hours, chatting over coffee, tea and a tremendous amount of treats.

7. Leaf

In a quirky Art Deco building across the road from Utility Bold St. is Leaf! We consider this place a dear friend, as it's kept many Utility staff members fed and caffeinated over the years.

With coffee, cocktails and cracking food, you can happily camp out in Leaf all day long. Known for great brunches and (of course) its incredible selection of loose leaf tea, it's a must for anyone visiting the city.

The space is large and open-plan but still feels cosy and comfortable. It's ideal for big groups (we've had a few gatherings there ourselves), is chilled in the day, and has a lively atmosphere in the evenings. It's also a great gig venue, so if you want to check out Liverpool's music scene, head down to Leaf.

Leaf, 65-67 Bold St, Liverpool L1 4EZ

8. Derek's

Oh sweet Derek's, the emerald of Allerton. So, you can't really hang out here just yet, but with sandwiches this good you'll stand on the street corner. New York soul, Liverpool spirit, Derek's is the deli of dreams.

A short walk from Calderstones park, it's a great place to grab a coffee and a bite whilst you're out and about. Spend the day perusing the many charity shops and indie businesses in the area and finish up with a peach ice tea and a doughnut! Did we mention that it's Sopranos themed? We don't quite know why but you don't question the sandwich gods.

9. Sutikku Bowl

We need to talk about buns. Sutikku offers up freshly baked Japanese Choux buns every day. And let us tell you, there is no finer morning than one that starts with a cold choux and a hot coffee. Grab a friend, buy those baked beauties and hop on over to Sefton park for a stroll around the lake.

Sutikku Bowl has a really chilled vibe. It's a small, calm place with a petite but mighty menu. With delicious Japanese-inspired food and an impressive collection of local beers and wines, you'll want to hunker down here for the night.

10. Flour Will Fly

Okay, so not a coffee shop but I bet they'd make you a coffee if you asked. This one made the list because there's nothing more gleeful than making a mess in someone else's kitchen! Flour Will Fly is a family-run business that hosts cooking classes from their own little workspace and deli. You don't have to go to Italy to make delicious, authentic pasta because there's a little piece of Italy in the heart of Liverpool.

We can't think of anything more wholesome than throwing on an apron and spending an afternoon making ravioli and cannolis with a bunch of pals. The place has a really warm atmosphere and the Flour Will Fly Team are gentle and funny. This is a special place where you can hang out with friends, making delicious food and a memory that you'll cherish. And as if all of this wasn't enough, you get a couple of drinks and complimentary Italian aperitivo foods too.

Flour Will Fly, Oriel Chambers, Unit 4, 14 Water St, Liverpool L2 8TD

11. Clippers Barber & Coffee Co

Well here's a combo we didn't know we needed; a coffee shop inside a barbershop. Clippers is the new kid on the block in an area that's short of good places to grab a drink. It's in a quiet, sunny spot on Booker Avenue and is an essential stop if you're strolling up towards Calderstones.

This place has a simple, industrial look and is a great place to hang out and catch up with friends. They have everything you'd expect to see on a coffee menu and they're always experimenting with something whacky. We highly recommend the Vietnamese Affogato and the carrot cake!

12. Ropes and Twines

Another one of our Bold Street buddies, we absolutely adore Ropes and Twines. There's something so sophisticated yet laid back about this place. They have an incredible library of wines and some of the finest coffee in the city. Try the mocha- they have a giant vat of molten chocolate and they'll dump a spoonfull in your cup.

It's a great place to stop if you're introducing someone to the city. You can comfortably hang out here for a couple of hours, as afternoon drifts into evening and coffee turns into wine. Their menu is carefully curated. Think simple dishes crafted using high quality produce. Their prosciutto and emmental sandwich is mindblowing.
