Kaweco DIY Sport: Everything You Need to Know
If you love stationery, there's something particularly satisfying about a pen that you've built yourself. The Kaweco DIY Sport allows stationery fans to do exactly that, combining one of Kaweco's most iconic pen designs with a hands-on making experience.
But what exactly is a Kaweco DIY Sport event, how does it work, and what makes the pens so special? Here's everything you need to know.
What is a Kaweco DIY Sport?
The Kaweco DIY Sport is a hands-on experience centred around the world-renowned Kaweco Sport fountain pen.
Rather than buying a fully assembled pen, participants are given the individual components needed to create their own Kaweco Sport. Using a special pen press, you can assemble the pen yourself and watch it take shape. The experience gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how the components of a Kaweco pen come together, while allowing you to leave with a pen that you've built yourself.
What is a Kaweco Sport?
The Kaweco Sport is one of Kaweco's best-known designs. First introduced in 1911, the compact fountain pen was designed to be small enough to carry in your pocket, while extending to a comfortable size when posted for writing.

What happens at a Kaweco DIY Sport event?
Today, the Kaweco Sport family includes fountain pens, ballpoint pens, rollerballs and mechanical pencils, alongside a constantly evolving selection of colours and finishes. Its compact size, distinctive octagonal cap and wide choice of colours have made the Sport a firm favourite with stationery enthusiasts and collectors.
At a DIY Sport event, you'll get the chance to build your own Kaweco Sport fountain pen from its individual components.
The pen is made up of seven components, which are assembled using a Kaweco pen press. The process is designed to be straightforward and enjoyable, making it suitable whether you're a long-time Kaweco collector or simply curious to try something different. And, of course, the best part is leaving with a finished pen that you assembled yourself.

Is the Kaweco DIY Sport a limited edition?
Yes. One of the things that makes the DIY Sport particularly exciting is that a new limited-edition colour is introduced each year.
The annual colour is created specifically for the DIY programme, so each year's DIY Sport has its own distinctive look. Once that year's edition has finished, the colour won't be repeated as part of the DIY programme. This makes the events an especially fun way to discover a new Kaweco colour, and gives collectors something new to look forward to each year.

Where can you attend a Kaweco DIY Sport event?
The Kaweco DIY Sport is a travelling event that visits stationery retailers around the world.
Rather than being permanently based in one location, the DIY experience tours participating retailers. This gives stationery fans in different cities the opportunity to build their own limited-edition Kaweco Sport. The travelling nature of the event is part of what makes it so exciting!
Keep an eye on the brand's official page for up-to-date information on Kaweco DIY events near you.
Is the Kaweco DIY Sport available to buy online?
The DIY Sport is designed as an in-store experience, rather than simply being another Kaweco Sport that you can order online. The pen is assembled during the event using the specialist Kaweco pen press, making the experience of building it yourself an important part of the appeal.
Availability can vary between participating retailers, so it's worth checking with your local stationery shop to find out if and when they're hosting a DIY Sport event.

Why are Kaweco DIY Sports popular with stationery collectors?
Part of the appeal is the combination of collectability and experience. Kaweco regularly introduces new colours across the Sport range, but the annual DIY colour has an added sense of occasion. There's only one DIY edition each year, and getting your hands on one involves actually building it yourself.
For stationery lovers, it's a chance to add something a little different to your collection. For anyone new to Kaweco, it's an enjoyable introduction to one of the brand's most recognisable designs.
And perhaps most importantly, you don't just own the finished pen – you can say you made it yourself.
Keep an eye out for the next Kaweco event
The Kaweco DIY Sport travels to stationery retailers around the world, so if you've missed this year's event, keep an eye out for announcements from Kaweco and participating stationery stores. With a new limited-edition colour introduced each year, there's always another DIY Sport to look forward to.
