I'm just a kid with adult money
Every so often a phrase pops up online that makes you pause and think, maybe I should. Recently it’s been: “I’m just a kid with adult money.”
You’ll see it under videos of people wandering around shops, happily picking up the sort of things they would have been obsessed with as a child. Stickers. Puzzles. Craft kits. A great cap. Stationery that makes you want to start writing something immediately, even if it’s just a shopping list.
The tone is usually slightly sheepish. A raised eyebrow. As if they’re admitting to something. Which is funny, because it’s hardly scandalous behaviour. And yet, most of us don’t actually shop like that.

Somewhere along the way, buying things purely because they’re fun stopped feeling like the normal thing to do. Adults are supposed to be sensible. Practical. Focused on the useful stuff. So we walk past things we like all the time.
The soft toy that makes your heart smile.
The sheet of stickers that’s somehow better than any sticker sheet you owned at school.
The Snoopy mug that heals your inner child.
The candle that would make an ordinary evening feel slightly more atmospheric.
The pen that makes you want to start journalling.
You notice them. You pick them up. Then you put them back.
Which is why the whole “kid with adult money” idea feels so appealing. It quietly gives permission to ignore that internal voice that says do you really need this?
Because sometimes the answer is simply: no, but I’d quite like it.

The funny thing is, these are the exact sorts of objects that people are very happy to buy for someone else. A thoughtful puzzle. A fun desk object. A great notebook. A cap in the perfect colour. A candle that makes a room feel calmer within about ten seconds.
They make brilliant gifts.
But they also make everyday life a bit more enjoyable. A desk that’s slightly more interesting to look at. A rainy afternoon activity waiting on a shelf. A small object that brings a bit of joy into the middle of an otherwise ordinary Tuesday.
After all, being an adult comes with enough seriousness and worry. It’s time to live a little.
