Ideas For Big Walks (That Aren't Sefton Park)

You want to pop on your walking boots and head into the great outdoors for a nice big walk! However... you feel like you have spent the whole of the last 12 months doing laps around Sefton Park. Somehow you have slowly gotten to know the ducks (and their family’s) by name... guilty!

We love you Sefton Park but maybe it’s time to explore somewhere else. Now there is no need to go far to experience scenic views though! We have some of the most amazing walking destinations right here on our doorstep!

1. Hale Village, Liverpool

A pure hidden gem! Hale village is a charming little village with plenty of history! You can follow the path down to the shore and embark on a wonderful trail from Rixton to Garston. Plenty of wildlife to see along the way.


2. Otterspool Promenade

Running alongside the famous River Mersey Otterspool Promenade is a lovely riverside walk for the whole family. With stunning views of the Wirral skyline, and plenty of greenery along the way including the wonderful Festival Gardens! There’s plenty to explore along the way.


3. Red Rocks Thurstaston

A short walk from Hoylake or West Kirby, Red Rocks Thurstanton features a beautiful view of rust-coloured sand dunes, reedbeds, and marsh. A lovely walk along a Sandy beach that overlooks Hilbre Island.


4. Wirral Country Park

The Wirral is overflowing with great walking designations! With around a 12 mile footpath following the line of the old West Kirby to Hooton railway line. There’s plenty to see and explore along the way. Afterwards, you can even pop to Park Gate for ice cream!


5. National Trust Formby

Formby has to be on this list. Perfect for a family‑friendly outing. With enchanting woodlands to explore and a stunning stretch of beach, the fun is endless. If it’s nice weather who knows you might even be tempted to dip your feet in the sea!


6. Mam Tor

Located in the Peak District, Mam Tor is perfect if you want to head a little bit further out. Climb the stone surface footpath to see gorgeous views over the Peak District.


7. Hilbre Islands

Always check the times of the tide before heading out to this wonderful island, and make sure you leave plenty of time to get back! Located in the Wirral, the island is home to an array of wildlife and even has its very own Bird Observatory. An ideal place to explore and maybe even treat yourself to a little picnic so you can take in the impressive views.


8. Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

Yes there are waterfalls near‑ish Liverpool! Who knew! Located in North Yorkshire, this is definitely worth the trip! Featuring some of the most spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery in the North. You will have to pay to get in so it’s worth checking opening times and ticket prices before you venture out.


9. Delamere Forest

Escape the crowds and enjoy nature at it’s finest in Delamere. Full of beautiful evergreen trees, Delamere is the largest woodland in the county! Meaning there’s loads to explore.


10. Sefton Coastal Path

Along the Sefton coastline, the Sefton Coastal path is a wonderful trail that stretches from Crosby to Southport! Perfect for a stroll where you want some fresh air and scenery. With plenty to see along the way from Anthony Gormley’s iconic iron men to even the possible sighting of some of the Sefton Shipwrecks!
